When I speak with patients about their eating habits, I often hear the same concern:

"I want to eat healthier, but I don't want to give up delicious food."

I completely understand. Healthy meals do not have to be bland or boring. Today, I'd like to introduce one of my favourite ingredients—one I personally enjoy and often recommend to patients: organic ancient grain pasta.

Why Are Ancient Grains Making a Comeback?

The term "ancient grains" may sound unfamiliar, but the idea is simple. These are traditional grains that have remained largely unchanged for generations, preserving many of their original characteristics.

Well-known ancient wheat varieties include Einkorn, Emmer, Spelt, Khorasan wheat (commonly known as Kamut®), and Italy's traditional Senatore Cappelli durum wheat.

Modern wheat, by comparison, has been selectively bred to improve crop yield and production efficiency. While highly successful agriculturally, this process has also changed some of the grain's original characteristics.

That is why I often tell patients:

"Sometimes, it is worth returning to foods that have been part of traditional diets for generations."

Why Your Body May Appreciate Ancient Grains

There are three main reasons why I value ancient grains.

First, they may provide useful amounts of protein, magnesium, iron and B vitamins, particularly when eaten as wholegrain products.

Second, wholegrain varieties are generally digested more slowly, which may help support steadier blood sugar levels and keep you feeling satisfied for longer.

Third, Khorasan and Spelt have different characteristics from modern wheat. Some people report that they feel easier to digest, although clinical evidence is still developing and individual responses vary.

One important point should be made clear. Ancient wheat varieties still contain gluten. They are not suitable for people with coeliac disease or a true wheat allergy.

Excellent Organic Ancient Grain Pasta Available in Australia

When possible, I prefer choosing products made from grains grown in Australia's clean agricultural environment.

One excellent Australian producer is L'Abruzzese in Adelaide, South Australia. They produce pasta using 100% Australian Certified Organic Spelt  and slow drying methods for excellent flavour and texture. They also offer certified organic Australian durum wheat pasta grown in New South Wales.

Another Australian artisan producer is Island Pasta Company on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. Their organic spelt pasta has a mild, nutty flavour and makes an excellent everyday choice for families wanting to move away from conventional wheat.

For those who need to avoid gluten, certified gluten-free buckwheat pasta is an excellent alternative, offering a satisfying texture while remaining completely wheat free.

What to Look for on the Label

When choosing ancient grain pasta, do not rely solely on the word "organic". Instead, look for:

  • Certified Organic certification rather than claims such as "natural" or "sustainably grown"

  • 100% Ancient Grain to ensure it is not blended with conventional durum wheat

  • Wholegrain or Wholemeal if maximising fibre intake is important

A Final Thought

Healthy eating does not begin with a dramatic lifestyle overhaul.

It begins with one simple choice at today's dinner table.

Whether you choose Australian-made organic spelt pasta or an ancient grain variety, switching to high-quality organic pasta can be a simple and enjoyable way to nourish yourself and your family.

Small changes, made consistently, often lead to the biggest improvements in long-term health. 🌿 Book a consultation with Healing Tree Natural Medicine to explore a personalised approach.
